Gnawa and World Music Festival of Essaouira
8th edition / 23-26 June 2005

The wonderful world of Gnawa musicians

The Gnawa and World Music Festival is coming up to its 8th edition. The magic of the Gnawa will be pulsating in Essaouira from the 23rd to the 26th June 2005.
For 4 days the festival will reveal its unique spirit in which enchantment touches the public as well as the guest musicians as it has done every year: the culture and spirituality of the Gnawa of Morocco and their wonderful musical encounters.

The Gnawa masters, with their guembris and metal castanets will fuse with foreign musicians of jazz, rock and world music, performing original encounters on stage in Essaouira, where the artists share their musical cultures: fusions which become richer every year.
21 Gnawa masters will be here for this 8th edition. These include Mahmoud Guinea, Hamid El Kasri, Mustapha Bakbou and Abdeslam Alikane. This year there will be a hommage from the maalems for a great musician, Abderrahmane Paca, one of the founding members of the group Nass El Ghiwane.

For the first time in Essaouira the Egyptian Fathy Salama will be performing. Pianist and composer, he is considered to be the inventor of "jeel" (Arabic pop), and collaborated with Youssou N'Dour on his last album "Egypt". He will be performing a repertoire which grew from a meeting with Hassan Bargamoun, one of the new virtuosi of "rango" (a type of marimba from southern Sudan) who will be here with his Egyptian Gnawa musicians.
Among the many renowned international artists featuring in the program this year will be poet-musician Danyel Waro, the Swedish-Senegalese duo Elika (violin) and Solo (kora), the wonderful Indian percussionist from Singapore Nantha Kumar, bass player from Guadaloupe Etienne Mbapp from the Joe Zawinul Syndicate, the Franco-Congolese drummer Roger Biwandu, French flautist Majik Malik, ex-drummer of Human Spirit, and the astonishing Armenian percussionist Arto Tunboyaclyan and many other surprise guests.

Also featuring is the Berber-Celtic 7 strong group Thalweg, one of whom is Khliff Miziallaoua, singer and guitarist from the Orchestre National de Barber. Between them they have created a fabulous mix of Maghrebi and Celtic music (Gnawa, lute, percussion).

The jazz trio Bozilo, recently formed group featuring Serbian pianist Boyan Z, Franco-Algerian drummer Karim Ziad and French saxophonist Julien Loureau, 3 artists who have combined to form Bo-Zi-Lo, bringing together Afro-Caribbean, Slavic and Maghrebi sounds.

Finally the Senegalese star Youssou N'Dour, with his group Super Etoile de Dakar, will bring the festival to a close with an unforgettable 100% African concert.

As you can see we have a fascinating and cosmopolitan program, keeping the universal and fraternal values held dear by the festival.
